Mulled Wine

Mulled Wine

Come Christmastime, a cup of Mulled Wine is a regular offering at just about every Holiday soirée, but the fact is, you can enjoy it right through winter! This recipe makes 10 to 12 servings. If you’re hosting a party with more guests, multiply as needed. If you are simply entertaining yourself at home on a chilly weekend, make a 1/2 portion of the recipe, grab a book and a blanket and snuggle up by the fire! You can certainly chill any left overs without the garnish  for up to 1 day and reheat when ready to use. Cheers!

2 x 750 ml bottles of fruity, full-bodied red wine – e.g. Merlot, Zinfandel

3 oranges, sliced

1” fresh ginger, sliced

8 cloves

2 x 3” stick of cinnamon

2 star anise

½ cup brandy

2/3 cups honey

Method:

  1. Cut 1 orange and reserve for garnish. Squeeze the juice of the other 2 oranges into a large saucepan.
  2. Add the wine, ginger, cloves, cinnamon , star anise, honey and brandy. Bring to a light simmer for about 30 minutes. Do not boil.
  3. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly for about 10 minutes. Strain into a large jug or if preferred simply strain out the spices.
  4. Serve warm and garnish with orange slices as desired. Cheers!
